LanguageCert General SELT B1 Preparation Book Review – Is It Worth It?

Are you planning to take the LanguageCert SELT B1 test for your UK Skilled Worker Visa or other UK visa routes? If you’re like me—nervous about passing the English test and unsure where to start—then having the right preparation materials is crucial.

In this blog, I’ll share my honest review of the LanguageCert General SELT B1 Preparation Book based on my real experience as someone who moved to the UK in 2021. Let’s find out if this book is the right choice for you.

Why I Needed a Good Preparation Book

Before I found LanguageCert, I had struggled with IELTS. I failed it more than once and felt discouraged. That’s when I learned about the LanguageCert SELT B1 test from a relative living in the UK—and it honestly made the whole process less stressful.

But even with an easier format, I knew preparation was still key. So I started looking for a book that was clear, practical, and exam-focused.

    First Impressions of the Book

When I first got the book, I was impressed with how well-structured and clean the layout was. Each section—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—is broken down clearly.

The instructions were straightforward, and the tasks looked similar to what I had seen on the actual exam format online. That gave me a boost of confidence early on.

What I Liked About the Book

    Realistic Practice Tests

The book includes several practice tests with answers, which gave me a real feel for what exam day would be like. I could time myself and compare my answers to the provided key.

Task Types Match the Real Exam

The Reading and Writing sections in particular reflect the kind of simple, clear language that the LanguageCert exam uses. This is a big help for learners whose first language isn’t English.

    Speaking Practice Format

Even though you take the Speaking test online or via video call, the book includes sample dialogues, questions, and tipsthat helped me prepare responses and reduce anxiety.

    Focused on CEFR B1 Level

The content was exactly the right difficulty—not too advanced, but also not overly simplified. If you’re targeting B1, this book stays true to that level.

    What Could Be Improved

While I found the book very useful, there were a few areas that could be better:

    • Explanations are brief — not always ideal if you’re self-studying with no tutor.
    • No translations or multilingual support — could be challenging for complete beginners.
    • Some exercises feel repetitive — though repetition can also help you get confident.

    Did It Actually Help Me?

    Yes, 100%.

After using this book consistently for about 3 weeks, I felt far more confident in all four sections. I especially saw improvement in Writing and Speaking—areas where I’d previously struggled.

When exam day came, I wasn’t scared. I knew what to expect, and I passed with solid scores across the board.

    Buy the Book

You can find the LanguageCert General SELT B1 preparation book on:

Make sure you’re buying from a trusted source to avoid outdated editions.

Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?

If you’re serious about passing the LanguageCert SELT B1 test and want something clear, exam-specific, and practical, this book is definitely worth it.

    It’s best for:

    • Self-learners preparing from home
    • Students or workers applying for UK visas
    • Anyone aiming for the CEFR B1 level

If you need extra help, you might still want to combine this book with a tutor or online videos—but it’s a solid foundation.
